What is a Corrugated Sheet?

Sep. 20, 2022

Corrugated sheet is a generic term that means any type of sheet steel strengthened for use in construction by having a series of alternating grooves and ridges forced into it. Technically, this could mean any metal roofing or wall panel. However, people that are in the industry define a corrugated metal panel as a metal roofing or siding panel that has S-type wavy and round corrugations.

Definition

A corrugated sheet is a metal sheet that is roll-formed into metal panels. Corrugated metal is an exposed fastener panel, meaning that each fastener is visible on the panel's surface.

The traditional shape of corrugated sheet metal is round and wavy. It is low cost, lightweight, durable, energy-efficient, long-lasting, and easy to install. Corrugated metal roofing is an excellent alternative to asphalt shingles or clay tile roofs. The durability of corrugated panels makes them a fit for both commercial and residential applications when used for metal roofing and metal siding projects. They are even used in other areas of the home including the ceiling, wainscoting, and fencing.

How Is Corrugated Sheet Made?

The corrugation process is accomplished by roll forming. This means that the sheet metal is pulled off of huge round metal coils and then it passes through rolling dies that form the panel into corrugated sheet metal. After the corrugated metal sheets pass through all of the rollers, it is sheared off at the correct panel length.

Benefits of Galvanized Corrugated Sheet

Galvanized Corrugated Sheet

Galvanized corrugated sheet also known as galvanized sheet or white iron: It is cold rolled continuous hot-dip galvanized sheet and strip of thickness 0. 25 to 2. 5 mm.

The steel sheet has a beautiful surface with a block or leaf-like zinc crystalline pattern, a firm galvanized layer and excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance. At the same time, the steel sheet has good welding performance and cold working forming performance. Compared with an electro-galvanized sheet, a hot-dip galvanized sheet has a thicker galvanized layer and is mainly used for parts requiring higher corrosion resistance. Galvanized corrugated sheet is widely used in construction, packaging, railroad vehicles, agricultural machinery manufacturing, and daily living goods.

How to Install Corrugated Roofing

What You'll Need:

ㆍTape Measure

ㆍCircular Saw/ Hand Saw

ㆍDrill

ㆍStraight Edge

ㆍNecessary Fixings and Flashings for your system

1. Determine the necessary overlap and overhang

One of the reasons corrugated sheeting is designed in a 'wave like' pattern is so that adjacent sheets can easily overlap with one another.

The length of this overlap will depend on the pitch of your roof, which should be detailed in your manufacturer's guide. An overlap of 150mm is often recommended for roofs with 10° pitches, whilst 300mm is recommended for 5° pitches.

Always allow for an overhang of at least 60-70mm so that water can run off without coming into contact with rafters or purlins, which can lead to damp and structural weakness.

2. Cut the sheets to size

Measure the length of your rafters and the distance between them. This should give you an area size for the sheets to be cut to. Depending on the material of your corrugated sheet you may need to use either a circular saw or hand saw. Either way, the sheet should be secured to a workbench so that you can get an even cut.

3. Determine the overlap direction

The overlapping of the sheets should be done in the direction of the wind. For example, if the wind is blowing from the east, the sheets on the left should overlap those on the right. This will prevent wind from blowing your sheets apart during the installation.

4. Fix the first sheet to your purlins

Align your first sheet at the edge of your roof, ensuring that the necessary overhang is maintained. Then, fix your screws or nails through the corrugation and into the purlin. These should be run vertically and not overtightened.

5. Fix the remaining sheets

The rest of the sheets can then be fixed. Remember to overlap each sheet with the one before it and secure using vertical fixings.

6. Add Flashing

Some flashing pieces will be similarly be corrugated and as such can also be overlapped with your sheeting. Flashing should be installed at the ridge, eaves and at any point where your roof abuts a wall.
